What to Expect
Beginner
Beginning violin is VERY exciting, but be prepared to GO SLOWLY with Ms. Moss. Together we will build a solid foundation for healthy posture, excellent technique, practice strategies, and musical language.
Weekly lessons start at 30 minutes.
For young students, parent/guardian involvement is crucial to student success! The first year of violin is learning how to practice together at home. Parents are responsible for attending lessons and taking notes and videos.
To get started, order Suzuki Violin Book 1 and Step by Step by Kerstin Wartberg. Go ahead, listen to your new CDs!
The first few weeks will not require a violin, but instead a box instrument which is provided. The instrument sizing and selection process will take place with Vanessa BEFORE purchasing or renting. Do NOT let your child play with violin before Vanessa gives you the green light. Earning access to the real violin is very exciting!
Daily Practice Expectations:
Starting at 15 minutes daily, will eventually expand to at least 25-35.
Intermediate
This is a broad range of student, both in age and experience.
Weekly lessons are typically 45 or 60 minutes.
In addition to their repertoire, students focus on reinforcing a foundation of solid technique through the use of etudes, scales, and arpeggios. Attention to theory and rhythmic precision help to make students valuable contributors and leaders in their school and youth orchestra ensembles.
Daily Practice Expectations:
45-75 minutes a day, depending on level.
Advanced
Advanced students have often developed an autonomous relationship with excellence in the craft. Frequently they have intrinsic motivation to explore resources, are curious about new solutions, and have systems in place that enable them to prioritize their instrument.
Students reinforce technique with regular scales, arpeggios, double stops, and etudes. Their musical and tactile skills will be challenged with major concerti, sonatas, and show pieces. Students will be prepared to begin the process of college auditions, if that’s a path they choose to follow.
Weekly lessons are typically 60-90 minutes.
Daily Practice Expectations:
90-120 minutes
